This documentary tells the story of Phyllis Diller’s early career in Alameda, California, when she performed at local venues while maintaining a home and raising her five children. In this clip, she talks about her first appearance at the Army Hospital at the Presidio in San Francisco.

The film was written, directed and produced by M. Saylor Billings, an Alameda resident and comedy arts veteran who has worked across North America, most notably with the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and PS NBC in New York City.

Phyllis of Fernside is the first in a series of short films about Alameda and its residents.
